In the United States, review gating is banned by the FTC, with hefty penalties provided for by law. Research is here:

Further, the following platforms specifically disallow review gating in their TOS: Google, Yelp, Booking, TripAdvisor, Expedia, Amazon, TrustPilot
Whether EMR’s “Prevent Negative Reviews” feature is review gating seems to be a matter of debate, but a careful reading of the research above and the sources linked, indicate that most independent and objective web articles agree that our approach is indeed review gating. Splitting hairs and debating a gray area with legal and financial consequences is going to be unacceptable for many agency owners.
Propose that EMR develop an alternative and compliant method of collecting reviews, similar to the one that GatherUp implemented in conjunction with (and blessed by) Google:
